The ANZAOMS New Zealand Branch’s Annual Scientific Meeting was held at the Rendezvous Heritage Hotel in beautiful Queenstown from 1-2 August 2025.
It was an outstanding two days of lectures and social events. Over 75 delegates from Australia and New Zealand came together for the event.
Day 1 focussed on some terrific presentations on research and clinical topics from trainees, registrars and house surgeons.
Day 1 & 2 contained a series of excellent lectures from keynote speaker Professor Ajoy Roychoudhury from India. With a distinguished career spanning 32 years of clinical practice, research, and education, his areas of expertise include cranio-maxillofacial trauma, temporomandibular joint surgery, and orthognathic surgery, but he is best known for his management of ankylosis in children and adults. He also gave the John Edwards Memorial Lecture.
We also heard from Dr Markus Troeltzsch who covers the whole field of oral and maxillofacial surgery and focusses extensively in augmentation procedures of the jaws, oral implantology, treatment and prevention of necrotic affections of the jaws, surgical and implant procedures for medically complex patients. Dr Troeltzsch (in conjunction with Geistlich) also presented an excellent pre-conference workshop on the 31 July – ‘Customised Bone Regeneration: A contemporary approach for managing complex dentoalveolar defect’.
Dr Brianna Burris gave an excellent lecture focussing on minimally invasive surgical management of TMJ Arthopathies and also joined a panel with our own Dr Patrishia Bordbar and Dr Lydia Lim to discuss a range of factors related to orthognathic surgery.
Dr Rolf Bettens (in conjunction with Ostalos and Southern Implants) also ran a very well received hands on Pre-Conference workshop on Pterygoid Implants and lectured in the main program on the same topic.
New Zealand local surgeons Dr Christian Freudslperger and Dr Abigail Estelle also provided fantastic lectures in the main program, focussing on ‘Personalised reconstructive surgery using patient-specific solutions’ and ‘Surgery in Resource Poor Settings’ respectively.
It was also great to have local New Zealand Surgeon Dr Nabeela Ahmed dial in to give an excellent talk on ‘Early vs Delayed Orbital Floor Repair Philosophies’.
The meeting was wrapped up with a fabulous dinner at the Heritage Hotel where delegates came together to enjoy a relaxed dinner to round out a great couple of days.
